Here’s another entry in the chronicling of interesting cars on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area of California. And this is only what your faithful correspondent can capture on camera – for example, today there was a Rover P4 on the streets of San Francisco, and an Alfa Berlina on the streets of Berkeley/Oakland. To catch us up, check out this 1964 Dodge 880 sedan. The owner has done some cool modifications that really add to the allure of this car – a slightly lowered body with shiny but worn paint is offset by red reverse steel wheels with faux knockoffs. This picture doesn’t really do it justice – if you live in Oakland, keep an eye open for this example of “the most elegant automobile ever fashioned by Dodge” (says the brochure).

Golf Yellow – 1971 BMW 2002
August 28, 2014Over here, we’re big fans of the safety colors used in the early 1970s, especially by most major German manufacturers. Colorado orange, Inca orange, and Agave green were quite popular on BMW 2002s, but there were also some rarer safety colors like Mint green and Golf yellow. So whenever a car in one of the rare colors pops up, it’s an automatic feature candidate here. And while recent studies have been inconclusive about whether certain colors actually correlate with a reduced accident rate, these cars do evoke an era where manufacturers were making a first collective step towards improving occupant (and pedestrian) safety. Cheap German Stick – 1987 BMW 528e
August 28, 2014The E28 BMW 528e (and the eta-engined E30 cars) were always considered the poor relations of the more sporty 325i, 533i and 535i cars. But while the eta engines are not particularly rev-happy, they are starting to gain appreciation for their low-end torque which, in the world of 65mph speed limits, and urban driving, matters more than horsepower. On the bright side, the eta-powered cars were also found to have their best fuel efficiency ratings when drivers held the throttle wide open when accelerating from a stop, so if you like flooring it, here’s an excuse to do so.
