767-2676 – 1966 Saab 96

July 15, 2016

Readers of a certain age might recall you could dial the letters POP-CORN on the phone to get the exact time. Readers of another age might remember the sound of 2-stroke Saab engines being referred to as popcorn makers, due to their unique soundtrack. Outside of a small cult of enthusiasts, the two-stroke powered Saabs seem to have largely disappeared. When you look at the handful of pre-900 Saabs available online, most have the Ford-derived V4 or the Triumph-derived slant 4, but it’s rather unusual to find a Saab that pegs the weirdness meter even further. Fortunately, they are out there – let’s take a look at this 1966 Saab 96 for sale for $4500 in North Albany, OR.

Opposite of Curvy – 1984 Volvo 240 DL TurboDiesel

July 11, 2016

With the giant charlie-foxtrot that is the plight of the only new manually-shifted turbodiesel car in North America, what possibilities are there for drivers who still lust after that formula? There’s not much on the new market, and now’s probably not the right time to trawl the market for a used VW TDI. So that leaves earlier used VWs, and European cars of the late 1970s and early 1980s like Peugeots, Mercedes, and the odd Volvo here and there. Sometimes you’ll have to turn to grey-market cars, like this 1984 Volvo 240 DL TurboDiesel for sale for $3100 in Clearview, WA.

Two-Year Model – 1979 Saab 900 GLE 5-Door

June 27, 2016

With the demise of Saab in 2011, finding an example of Sweden’s odder marque is pretty unusual, unless you live in a major American northeastern or western city. But what to do if all your friends drive Saabs, and you want to stand out? How about trying to find a two-door sedan, only offered for a couple of years in North America? Well, those are nice and light, and structurally probably quite stiff, but not as utilitarian as a Saab could be. So let’s go one step further back in the history of the 900, and find an elusive Saab 5-door hatch. No, it’s not a 9000, it’s this this 1979 Saab 900 GLE 5-Door for sale for $2395 in Estacada, OR.
