Two-Year Model – 1979 Saab 900 GLE 5-Door

June 27, 2016

With the demise of Saab in 2011, finding an example of Sweden’s odder marque is pretty unusual, unless you live in a major American northeastern or western city. But what to do if all your friends drive Saabs, and you want to stand out? How about trying to find a two-door sedan, only offered for a couple of years in North America? Well, those are nice and light, and structurally probably quite stiff, but not as utilitarian as a Saab could be. So let’s go one step further back in the history of the 900, and find an elusive Saab 5-door hatch. No, it’s not a 9000, it’s this this 1979 Saab 900 GLE 5-Door for sale for $2395 in Estacada, OR.

Swedish Army Knife – 1988 Saab 900 SPG

March 11, 2016

A popular saying goes “jack of all trades, master of none”, and there are many examples out there on the car market today. SUVs trying to be sports cars, sedans and wagons jacked up to go off-road, vehicles that cross-over to a land of poor driving dynamics, and more. In the 1980s, though, there was a car that was probably one of the best – let’s call it a “jack of all trades, master of most”. The Saab 900 had excellent handling and acceleration, great comfort, reasonable fuel consumption, and an amazing capacity for stuff. While the styling was divisive compared to its peers, anyone could argue its case in comparison to, say, a Porsche Cayenne or BMW X6. That said, up for consideration today is this 1988 Saab 900 SPG for sale for $2250 (or $2700 including a parts car and parts collection) somewhere in Cumberland County, ME.

Boost to 55! – 1990 Saab 900 Turbo

February 1, 2016

With the story of Saab pretty much sealed – as a matter of fact, they may never reappear as a passenger car brand since Saab AB reminded the Chinese electric car company building the 9-3 they have no rights to the name – the 900 seems to be guaranteed a place as one of the iconic models produced by the company. And there are very few modern cars that will duplicate the experience of a turbo car of the 1980s-1990s, with that kick in the pants midway through the rev range (other than a couple of high output fours made by Toyota, Honda, and Subaru). Let’s take a look at this 1990 Saab 900 Turbo for sale for $3950 in Seattle, WA.
