Considering what a time of uncertainty it was for the automotive industry, the 1980s truly produced some icons. BMW M3, Porsche 944, VW GTI, and many others came from this era. One more icon you can’t forget is the Honda Civic CRX. Originally designed as a commuter car like the Fiero, the CRX quickly started winning admirers due to exactly those things that helped it save fuel – light weight, compact size, high-tech engine, only those people admired it for its performance. If you want to admire one in your driveway, you can pick up this 1986 Honda CRX for $2390 in Yakima, WA, where it’s been for sale for at least a month.

RustyButTrusty On The Street – Porsche, VW, Ford, Toyota

It’s interesting to observe what cars survive on the streets of San Francisco. Some are obvious, like the VW Beetle, which is still an icon associated with the city. Others, like the Porsche 924 and Toyota van, are somewhat unexpected, but if you look at the reasons why, it makes more sense.

You can still find Porsche 924s here and there, being used as daily drivers. Thanks to their well-rust-proofed bodies, they can endure sitting outside, and with their large rear windows they should have good visibility and maneuverability for parking and driving on narrow streets. They’re also powerful enough for the occasional out of town trip, and have decent luggage space should you decide to go away overnight.

Overexposed – 1988 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma

One of the great themes of 1970s and 1980s design that has yet to be repeated is the wedge, and perhaps it will never come back due to pedestrian safety rules. Great expressions of the wedge include the Lamborghini Countach and Lotus Esprit. Less great, but equally interesting wedge design cars include the Subaru XT sports coupe and the 1988-90 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma. In fact, having those two parked in your garage would make an interesting picture. In the US market, the Galant Sigma was available with a 3-liter V6 and 4-speed automatic, and had limited sales success. You can find have your own Japanese rarity, today’s 1988 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma, for $2250 in East Elmhurst, NY.
