It’s interesting that VW was able to concurrently sell their iconic legacy product – the Beetle – at the same time as the more modern and better Rabbit. Imagine Honda selling their 1986 Civic alongside the 2016 model; though even this is not an accurate comparison, since VW had completely changed the fundamental concept of their entire product lineup between the senior and junior cars. And sure, by 1976 people were not exactly buying Beetles as fast as VW could make them, but you could still walk into a showroom and get something truly aged – perhaps the closest we are to this today are some of the American manufacturers’ products, like the Panther-platform cars (Crown Victoria / Town Car) or the Chevrolet/GMC vans, but these are only half as old and not facing more modern competition in the same class from their own manufacturers. Original Owner – 1976 VW Beetle
May 7, 2016Vocho en las EEUU – 1971 VW Beetle
February 19, 2015With the millions of VW Beetles sold in this country and the world, they’re still pretty ubiquitous. So it’s hard to find what you might call an unusual version of the Beetle. For people north of the Mexican border, this is any Beetle built after 1979. The latest versions even had fuel injection and a catalytic converter, which must be pretty similar to final Canadian/US spec. Mexican built Beetles have an interesting mixture of features compared to the standard Canadian/US Beetles, and late in their production run lost things such as the flow-through ventilation system and any chrome fittings. Powder Bug – 1972 VW Beetle Convertible
October 2, 2014It’s easy enough to find a cheap convertible, and to find a cheap Beetle, but to find an affordable VW Beetle convertible is not the easiest task. Most are complete piles with a shredded roof and sunbaked paint, or nicely preserved/restored with a corresponding price. If you’re looking for a little taste of that 1940s touring convertible experience, with the large pram-style folding top and almost-separate fenders, you should look no further than the VW Beetle convertible.
