Not What It Appears – 1967 VW Beetle

August 18, 2014

So, it’s another VW Beetle. Sure, it’s the desirable 1967, but we’re looking at a 1493cc flat four with a meager 53hp. And because the owner is either pretentious or ironic, there’s a Faux-Royce hood on it, and what looks like a rather rough rattle canned red metallic paint job. But wait, there’s more – can you see the wheels from a Toyota Tacoma, and the fake side pipes, and the nasty JC Whitney side mirrors? Why are we interested in this car? Read on to learn more about this 1967 VW Beetle for sale for $3800 in Hayward, CA.

A Steal? 1976 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

May 29, 2014

VW Beetles are still so common in the western states that it’s often hard to get too excited about them, unless they have some special feature. And by the late 1970s, Beetles were antiquated cars, largely superseded by the Rabbit/Golf and Jetta, and the convertible awaiting replacement by the 1980 Rabbit Convertible. However, they did benefit from updates such as fuel injection to pass the new emissions standards, better impact protection, a catalytic converter, rack and pinion steering, and strut suspension, along with minor luxuries we would now expect as standard. As one of the last true convertibles to be sold before the expected ban on open-top cars, various special editions were made. Today’s car is not one of those, but it does benefit from many of the end-of-days upgrades – check out this 1976 VW Super Beetle Convertible, for sale for $4000 somewhere on the San Francisco peninsula, CA.

Depending on your perspective, hoards of old cars are either sad or interesting. But they’re also kind of like a car accident – you can’t look away. And here at RustyButTrusty HQ, it’s hard to look away from hoards containing small, sporty, or underdog cars, particularly imported ones. So let’s start off with a selection from a hoard in eastern West Virginia (wait, isn’t that just Virginia?) – this 1970s VW Treehuggers Edition Beetle, for sale in Ranson, WV. And yes, there’s no price, but you know the saying – if you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Thanks to reader Dave for finding this listing.
