If you were to think of 1980s cars that had a significant impact for their manufacturers, the 9th generation Ford Thunderbird would probably not come to mind first. But this was the first product of Ford’s aero-style design phase, which included hugely successful models like the Taurus and Sierra. It was also one of the first Fords of its time to be designed to compete with the European sporting coupes such as the VW Scirocco and BMW E30 3-series, as well as the developing flood of Japanese coupes including the Isuzu Impulse, Toyota Celica and Datsun 200SX. While most versions of the Thunderbird were the bland 3.8 liter 110hp V6 or the slightly livelier 140hp 5-liter V8, the hot version to have was the 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged Lima engine with a 5-speed manual, good for 155hp and 190 lb.-ft. of torque. The Bird is the Word – 1986 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe
October 7, 2014Odd Ford #1 – 1968 Ford Thunderbird Landau 4-door
June 2, 2014If you’ve been here before, you might have noticed some triggers that will get otherwise ordinary cars listed – convertible tops, suicide doors, turbo/supercharging, rarity. It’s not very common to find affordable post-war cars that have suicide doors, but among that short list is the fifth generation Ford Thunderbird, built from 1967-1971. It has many of the design cues of the 1960s jet age school – grill mimicking a jet intake, sparing use of chrome in reaction to the excesses of the 1950s, coke bottle rear fender peaks, and simple, clean interior design. You can find this 1968 Ford Thunderbird Landau 4-door for sale for $2700 in Santa Cruz, CA.
Suicide Pair – Two 1968 Ford Thunderbird Sedans
March 20, 2014The fifth-generation Ford Thunderbird, introduced in 1967, was Ford’s effort to move the formerly sporting coupe upwards and away from that young upstart sporting coupe, the Mustang. For 1967, they did a full redesign which turned out to be an odd juxtaposition of future and past – jet-intake-influenced front end, modernistic tail, and vinyl roof with landau irons. On the bright side, 1968 T-birds got the 385-series 429ci engine, pushing out a bold 360hp for some of the best performance any Thunderbird had ever, and it was also recognized for having some of the best brakes of any car sold in America. You can find the first of our two cars, this 1968 Ford Thunderbird Landau 4-door, for sale for $2999 in Portland, OR (and oddly listed on Miami craigslist with a California East Bay Area phone number).
