VW was justly famous for its advertising campaigns back in the days of the air-cooled cars, though they still seem to live in the shadow of those successful commercials today. Most were self-deprecatingly funny, or poked fun at the folly of driving a larger car, but in advertising the Type 3 Squareback, VW could be considered a little vain – clearly they were trying to avoid the uncool “station wagon” designation by referring to their long-roof car with extra side windows and a rear hatch as a “Squareback sedan”. Hmm. Today, we’ll settle for saying these are a cool little two-door wagon – an extinct species in the genus “station wagon”. July 22, 2014Interesting Parts – 1976 BMW 2002
July 21, 2014Following a reader request to keep an eye on the price range of featured cars, we’ve got an option here that will help keep things down. While definitely a special car that’s a recognized icon, BMW 2002s are not exactly rare in the classic car world, and the latter, big-bumper cars are considered by many to be less desirable (though retrofitted with home-market chrome bumpers, they look every bit as good). So that’s when you go looking for extras – the interesting little changes that were made by the selling dealer or the owners. To see some special extras on a cheap 2002, check out this 1976 BMW 2002 for sale for $2000 in Bellevue, WA.
RustyButTrusty on the Street – Alfa, Mini, Mercedes, Volvo
July 19, 2014Welcome back to RustyButTrusty on the Street, where we take a look at recent sightings of people using classic cars as they were originally intended. First up is the RustyButTrust 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider, which was a surprise participant in the 2014 Motherlode 400 Rally since the Alfetta was still down for repair. 40ish classic cars hit the small town of Hornitos, CA for lunch, and you have to wonder what the locals thought at being swarmed by that many old cars at once. In the background, you can see another participant’s 1969 GTV. The driving on this year’s Motherlode Rally was amazing as usual, with more technical driving than some other vintage rallies and two nights at the same location so you needn’t drag everything with you.
