1800 Sedan – 1967 Volvo 122S

October 24, 2014

Before Volvo’s primary reputation was as a safe, sensible car, thanks to stunts like stacking them for ads, they were practical yet sporty cars that could safely haul the family around in a bit of style during the week, while being fun on the back roads on the weekend. And in gentler climates, people still use them that way today. And if you’re going to do that, you might as well not use a pristine exmaple – find one that’s mechanically in order, but cosmetically good to fair. Like this 1967 Volvo 122S for sale for $2200 in St. Helens, OR.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Dodge, Jaguar, Volvo, Opel, Chevrolet

August 28, 2014

Here’s another entry in the chronicling of interesting cars on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area of California. And this is only what your faithful correspondent can capture on camera – for example, today there was a Rover P4 on the streets of San Francisco, and an Alfa Berlina on the streets of Berkeley/Oakland. To catch us up, check out this 1964 Dodge 880 sedan. The owner has done some cool modifications that really add to the allure of this car – a slightly lowered body with shiny but worn paint is offset by red reverse steel wheels with faux knockoffs. This picture doesn’t really do it justice – if you live in Oakland, keep an eye open for this example of “the most elegant automobile ever fashioned by Dodge” (says the brochure).

Hot Rod Swede – 1966 Volvo 122S

July 19, 2014

The great thing about Volvos, aside from their minimalist Swedish design aesthetic and durability, is the fact their rather conservative and plain styling can hide something really fun. And unexpected fun is the best kind – think of the last time you had a surprisingly good meal at that hole in the wall, or hit it off with a new friend. So, you say, what does that metaphor have to do with a red two-door car with a spoiler on the front? Well, it’s a Volvo, so the stock powertrain promises a safe, respectable 95-or-so horsepower, and the 4-speed M41 overdrive transmission promises relaxed freeway cruising. You can find this Volvo 122S for sale for $4000 in Bellingham, WA.
