Hybrid – 1974 Porsche 914 (plus bonus 1975 Porsche 914)

December 25, 2014

Even though the Germans offer several top-down roadster options nowadays (reality of the folding hardtop notwithstanding), they were not historically a producer of such cars. For quite a while, the only ragtop two-seater was the Mercedes SL line, and it’s a stretch to call that a sports car in the traditional sense. For the most part, those indulgences were left to the Italians and British, who foolishly chose to bungle their automotive industries with things like Spiders and roadsters. And now look what they’ve got… right? And the Germans have assumed the mantle for both luxury and sports cars. Anyhow, you could argue the genesis of the contemporary German roadster, ignoring the seminal BMW 328 and 507, might be the Porsche 914. Check out this 1974 Porsche 914 for sale for $4000 in Portland, OR.

Rotary Pair – 1978 Mazda RX-7 plus bonus 1979 RX-7

September 13, 2014

While most RX-7 enthusiasts seem to aspire to the top-spec 5-letter GSL-SE with its 135hp 13b engine, there’s something very appealing about the simplicity of the original RX-7 – the funkier wheels and dual tail light rear end give the basic wedge (which shares a lot with the Porsche 924) some character. As with many 1970s versions of cars which were sold through the 1980s, the earlier cars probably weigh less and are less insulated, giving a purer, more raw experience. Oddly enough, the New York market has sprouted a couple of sweet examples of these cars – check out this 1978 Mazda RX-7 for sale for $3500 in Bridgeport, CT.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Dodge, Jaguar, Volvo, Opel, Chevrolet

August 28, 2014

Here’s another entry in the chronicling of interesting cars on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area of California. And this is only what your faithful correspondent can capture on camera – for example, today there was a Rover P4 on the streets of San Francisco, and an Alfa Berlina on the streets of Berkeley/Oakland. To catch us up, check out this 1964 Dodge 880 sedan. The owner has done some cool modifications that really add to the allure of this car – a slightly lowered body with shiny but worn paint is offset by red reverse steel wheels with faux knockoffs. This picture doesn’t really do it justice – if you live in Oakland, keep an eye open for this example of “the most elegant automobile ever fashioned by Dodge” (says the brochure).
