Manual Luxury – 1983 BMW 733i 5-speed

There’s something perversely appealing about a luxury car with a manual transmission. Most large luxury sedans are much better suited to automatics, with their larger, more powerful engines and most other features enjoying some level of automation. But if you like a shot of sport in your luxury sedan, there are not that many options. When the BMW 7-series was outgrowing the legacy of the E3 Bavaria, and/or BMW was still a sporty car brand, you could find cars like this 1983 BMW 733i 5-speed, now for sale in Scottsdale, AZ for $2650.

1980s Heros – 1983 Volvo 244 Turbo and 1989 Ford Taurus SHO

What with all the emissions laws sucking the power (and filth, if you’re honest) out of our cars in the 1970s, manufacturers started finding ways to put actual performance and driving excitement back into cars after the initial blow. So you got cars like the Saab 99 Turbo, Fiat Spider Turbo, and the BMW 325i (six cylinders in a small sedan? what?) as turbochargers, fuel injection, and efficient catalytic converters made up for the Clean Air Act casualties. Somewhat later to the game, but absolutely credible as a 1980s icon, was the Volvo 244 Turbo. Unfortunately, many of the turbos have disappeared off the road, but you can still find this relatively low-mile 1983 Volvo 244 Turbo for sale for $3400 in Portland, OR.

The Underdog – 1972 BMW Bavaria Two-Fer

This might come as a surprise, but this site is all about the underdog cars. Well, mostly. And often times, the underdog can be an equally capable vehicle that has less desirable styling – consider the Falcon as a 4-door Mustang, the Alfa Berlina as a 4-door GTV, or the Maserati Quattroporte as a 4-door Sebring/3500. Sure, the 2-doors are all great looking cars, but they cost more, and you can’t bring your friends along. And who of you doesn’t secretly hope that a ride in a classic car will bring another convert into the fold? So when you walk up to a stranger’s door with Bible (AKA repair manual) in hand and clean coveralls on, you should be driving door-to-door in exhibit one in the conversion tool kit, this 1972 BMW Bavaria for sale for $4000 in San Luis Obispo, CA.
