Pepto Crown – 1955 Dodge Coronet

September 2, 2014

Something about the size and opulence of 1950s Detroit confections makes you expect they are all out of reach of the low-buck hobbyist, but in some cases, you’d be wrong – you just have to shop carefully. And even if you shop carefully, then you have to be cautious about looking for a bodge repair done in the 1970s when it was just a fully-depreciated used sedan. For 1955, the third-generation Coronet became Dodge’s low-line entry in the market, although it did offer some useful upgrades like power windows and safety door locks, and on higher line models, Dodge’s Red Ram V8. As a low-line model, though, it certainly still carried a lot of the optimistic design of post-war America. Check out this 1955 Dodge Coronet for sale for $4000 in Quincy, MA.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Dodge, Jaguar, Volvo, Opel, Chevrolet

August 28, 2014

Here’s another entry in the chronicling of interesting cars on the roads of the San Francisco Bay Area of California. And this is only what your faithful correspondent can capture on camera – for example, today there was a Rover P4 on the streets of San Francisco, and an Alfa Berlina on the streets of Berkeley/Oakland. To catch us up, check out this 1964 Dodge 880 sedan. The owner has done some cool modifications that really add to the allure of this car – a slightly lowered body with shiny but worn paint is offset by red reverse steel wheels with faux knockoffs. This picture doesn’t really do it justice – if you live in Oakland, keep an eye open for this example of “the most elegant automobile ever fashioned by Dodge” (says the brochure).

Spotless – 1985 Shelby Charger Turbo

August 22, 2014

If the Toyota MR2 wasn’t big enough for you, the Pontiac Fiero too crude, and the VW Scirocco all too common, you just had to look at Chrysler’s Omni series for inspiration. Specifically, Carroll Shelby was doing his bit to make some of the most utilitarian, uninteresting products into rockets that evoked what he did to the Sunbeam Alpine and AC Ace. Mostly, this involved turbos and performance suspension, and a great example of that era is this 1985 Shelby Charger Turbo for sale with bidding at $2175, reserve not met, and just under 2 days left to go in Crestline, OH.
