If The Van’s A-Rockin’ – 1964 Ford Econoline

March 19, 2014

One of the great things about old cars is they’re so easily able to illustrate a specific time in history (well, at least the last 120 years). Conversion vans are definitely one of those vehicles – remnants of a relatively short-lived fad that could have been an outgrowth of the craze for VW Type 2 vans in the late sixties. Take dad’s old trade van, airbrush something cool on the outside, and pick from a list of bar/shag carpet/heart shaped windows/quadraphonic stereo with 8-track player/bed/captain’s chairs/tuck-and-roll vinyl to complete the effect. Sure, you’ll want to throw a whole bottle of Lysol at the interior of this thing, but after that, it’s the perfect canvas for a restoration, not to when it was new, but to its reinvention at the age of ten or so. You can find this 1964 Ford Econoline for sale for $3500 in Santa Rosa, CA.

Terminal Pig Nose? 1967 Citroen HY

October 3, 2013

With our choices limited to what some people would call “credit card money”, there are some vehicles that simply won’t show up on these pages. Ferraris, Rolls Royces, and Tatras are among the cars that are desirable, rare, luxurious, or a combination of those that makes base prices for a desirable example start at the five figure level. While it’s not as luxurious or exclusive as some of the exotics, the Citroen HY is very desirable for its quirky looks and innovative approach to a box on wheels. However, if you’re willing to live with a little (perhaps a lot) of rust, you can pick up this 1967 Citroen HY van in Willits, CA, a couple of hours north of San Francisco, for a mere $3900.

RustyButTrusty On The Street – Porsche, VW, Ford, Toyota

September 28, 2013

It’s interesting to observe what cars survive on the streets of San Francisco. Some are obvious, like the VW Beetle, which is still an icon associated with the city. Others, like the Porsche 924 and Toyota van, are somewhat unexpected, but if you look at the reasons why, it makes more sense.

You can still find Porsche 924s here and there, being used as daily drivers. Thanks to their well-rust-proofed bodies, they can endure sitting outside, and with their large rear windows they should have good visibility and maneuverability for parking and driving on narrow streets. They’re also powerful enough for the occasional out of town trip, and have decent luggage space should you decide to go away overnight.
