Loewy 4-Door – 1955 Studebaker Commander

October 7, 2013

In the early to mid-1950s, few automakers were building anything as low and aerodynamic-looking as Studebaker, with their line of Commanders designed by Bob Bourke, who was working for Raymond Loewy’s studio. From some angles, one could arguably say the Commander (and its brother, the Hawk line of cars) might have influenced the Citroen DS, with its pointy, low nose and headlights mounted in pods (as seen on the earlier Citroens), and even the sloping roofline. Sure, in other ways they’re vastly different, so maybe that’s just a way of pointing out how very unique these cars were. Find our accessible example of unusual 1950s design work in this 1955 Studebaker Commander 4-door, available for $3200 in Selma, OR, just north of the California border.

Turbo Notches – Pair of Saab 900 Turbo Sedans

October 5, 2013

It’s amazing and kind of sad it’s become a rarity to see original Saab 900s driving around on the street anymore. For the level of popularity they had in the 1980s, and a level of durability comparable to a Volvo 240, you’d expect to see more survivors. Perhaps their performance orientation means more have succumbed to accidents or engine failure, but in any case, it’s a treat to see one being driven. While ownership of a 900 sedan brings up some tough questions (try buying a Christmas tree with your non-hatch car, for example), at this point, the rarity means you should include the sedan in your search for the best car out there. And speaking of best car out there, let’s check out the best car for the price, a 1984 Saab 900 turbo sedan for only $450 in Simi Valley, CA.

RustyButTrusty On The Street – Porsche, VW, Ford, Toyota

September 28, 2013

It’s interesting to observe what cars survive on the streets of San Francisco. Some are obvious, like the VW Beetle, which is still an icon associated with the city. Others, like the Porsche 924 and Toyota van, are somewhat unexpected, but if you look at the reasons why, it makes more sense.

You can still find Porsche 924s here and there, being used as daily drivers. Thanks to their well-rust-proofed bodies, they can endure sitting outside, and with their large rear windows they should have good visibility and maneuverability for parking and driving on narrow streets. They’re also powerful enough for the occasional out of town trip, and have decent luggage space should you decide to go away overnight.
