There’s a lot to be said for older Mercedes as a usable, practical classic car. Sold as a prestigious car when new, they featured elegant styling, some advanced features, and good build quality. Being one of the first cars to feature front and rear crumple zones, it’s a classic you can actually feel somewhat safe driving among today’s distracted drivers, and the M180 dual-carb straight six has 120hp. While you could never call it quick, with a top speed of 109mph (and hitting 60mph in 13 seconds), you’ll cruise comfortably at speeds beyond the legal limit. You can find this 1966 Mercedes 230S for sale for $2900 in Dallas, TX.

March 25, 2014Going Abroad – 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfasud
March 24, 2014If there’s one car that is simultaneously fantastic and likely to have done its manufacturer in if imported to North America, it’s the Alfasud. Amazing to drive, with great handling and a rev-happy flat four, and yet saddled with indifferent quality and unconventional interior design, the ‘sud would have pushed its maker out of the North American market 15 years sooner. It’s too bad, because one could arguably say it was one of the first premium small cars, ages before BMW and Mercedes figured out that compact cars needed to be part of their product lineup. You can find this 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfasud for sale for €2500 ($3459 today).
Going Abroad – 1965 Innocenti-Morris IM3
March 21, 2014As we saw today with the Alfa Romeo Arna, it was not uncommon for Italian manufacturers to build other nations’ cars under license. Here is another example of the practice – the Innocenti-Morris IM3. Innocenti had already built two BMC cars under license, the A40 and the 950 Spider (based on the Spridget). It had the twin-carburetor 1100cc engine, altered front-end styling, a different dash cluster, and other more minor details. You can find this 1965 Innocenti-Morris IM3 for sale for €1500 ($2069) in Milan, Italy.
