March 19, 2016

After yesterday’s featured MGB LE, it’s time to make sure those of you who are uncomfortable with that ragtop business or the heavy-handed updates to a classic design also have a choice. Fortunately, the world of MG provides for you too, and without emptying your wallet, either. Sure, most of the best MG BGTs have moved out of our range, but with a bit of careful digging, you can find a decent car that will provide lots of fun in that basic-fun MGB way. Limited Abilities – 1980 MGB LE

March 18, 2016

Produced over 18 years, there sure are many MGBs out there, but since they epitomize the British sports car much like the Ford Mustang epitomizes the American sports coupe, they’re worth a look. As mentioned in an article in Hemmings Sports & Exotic car last year, the great thing about MG’s B and BGT is their simplicity, and, if well-maintained, their reliability. Of course, being the epitome of the British sports car, many other people have picked up on this fact, so you might have to look a bit deeper than the obvious chrome-bumper, steel-dash, wire-wheel cars of the 1960s. And if you can get into the aesthetics of the late 1970s and early 1980s, either for irony or nostalgia, it’s worth a look at this 1980 MGB LE for sale for $3800 in Georgetown, TX.

Unfiltered – 1972 MG Midget

November 13, 2015

For the final feature inspired by last week’s Subaru BR-Z rental, here’s another car that has overlapping qualities with that newer coupe. Granted, there are vast differences, but among new cars there is not a lot there for the classic car enthusiast who bemoans the loss of sensation in today’s newer cars – no engine noise, no road noise, no vibration, and – who in the dark days of the early 1980s knew we’d complain about this – too much power to really have fun. The MG Midget and Austin-Healey Sprite twins certainly had none of those problems – there’s plenty of engine and road noise, a little vibration here and there, enough power to have fun but not so much you’ll get in trouble, and it one-ups the Subaru with things like a challenging roof. Check out this 1972 MG Midget for sale for $4000 in Sacramento, CA.
