Rusty But Trusty on the Street – BMW 2002tii, Jaguar XJ6, Pontiac Catalina, Datsun 2000, and Mercedes 280SL

April 1, 2014

Time for more catching up on the local sights. First off is an early-morning sighting of a BMW 2002tii the way we like them – daily driven and a little crispy around the edges. This would probably horrify the local BMWCCA show crowd – after all, no amount of Q-tips will clean the dirt out of the nooks and crannies on this one – but it’s great to see someone actually using their 2002 – a tii no less – as intended. This looks to be the Agave green color, and aside from the rust, it looks really straight and complete, down to the steel tii wheels with hubcaps. This has been a California car since at least the early 1980s, judging by the sunrise plates.

Go To Heckflosse! – 1966 Mercedes 230S

March 25, 2014

There’s a lot to be said for older Mercedes as a usable, practical classic car. Sold as a prestigious car when new, they featured elegant styling, some advanced features, and good build quality. Being one of the first cars to feature front and rear crumple zones, it’s a classic you can actually feel somewhat safe driving among today’s distracted drivers, and the M180 dual-carb straight six has 120hp. While you could never call it quick, with a top speed of 109mph (and hitting 60mph in 13 seconds), you’ll cruise comfortably at speeds beyond the legal limit. You can find this 1966 Mercedes 230S for sale for $2900 in Dallas, TX.

Snowballer – 1978 Mercedes 280 SLC

March 18, 2014

The coupe version of the R107 roadster, the C107, never saw as much success, and was allowed to expire soon after the C126 coupe debuted in 1980. However, that makes it an appealing value-for-money alternative to its brother and son, and in European specification with the smaller bumpers, the design is actually quite elegant in a period 1970s kind of way. Because after all, who doesn’t like a car that comes from the factory with window louvers? You can find this 1978 Mercedes 280 SLC for sale for $4000 in Auburn, CA.
