While the Scirocco was one of the first applications of a stylish coupe/GT body on ordinary front-wheel-drive econobox mechanicals, it was by no means the first to make use of cheap underpinnings as a basis for a sporty car. Much like the Ford Capri, Isuzu Piazza/Impulse, and Corolla GT-S, it allowed younger buyers to have some sporting experience while not spending too much money, and much like those, it received drivetrain upgrades to go with its rakish design. And so in 1986, VW introduced their Scirocco with a 16 valve engine, putting out 123bhp and making the 0-60 run in around 8 seconds, quite respectable for the time. Woohoo, Cheap Meat Again! – 1983 BMW 733i

March 5, 2014

It’s not often you can pick up a German autobahn bruiser for a mere 3 digit price. As you may know, RustyButTrusty loves it some old BMWs, and the E23 7-series is one of them. Mostly unloved in the used car market, although it’s not as clear why as with the E21 3-series, their perceived complexity might be a deal-killer for many. However, knowing you paid less than 10 Benjamins for a respectable looking car means you might be willing to overlook, say, broken cruise control or air conditioning that just needs a charge. You can find this 1983 BMW 733i for sale for the low, low price of C$999 in Maple Ridge, BC.

Collect All Two – 1986 Mercedes 560 SEC and bonus 560 SEL

March 5, 2014

Older luxury cars are often a risky proposition, but you could do a lot worse than running a Mercedes W126. Available in coupe or sedan versions, this is said by many Mercedes enthusiasts to be one of the last to be designed and built with an eye to maximum quality. The facelifted second series S-class debuted in 1985, and featured the 4.2- and 5.6-liter V8 engines. While these were far from the 6.3 and 6.9 installed in previous generations of Mercedes’ top sedan, they still put out about 200hp and a respectable 288 lb.-ft. of torque. You can find this 1986 Mercedes 560 SEC for sale for C$3250 in Surrey, BC.
