Tastefully Modified – 1991 BMW 318i

February 2, 2014

You can easily find E30 BMWs under $4000, but most often they’re poorly modified, banged up, high mileage, or a combination of those. It’s also harder to find affordable E30s with manual transmission, particularly in the 4-door version. And sure, 4-doors aren’t the coolest, but when you’re trying to spread the classic sporty-car gospel, you gotta have enough doors to give your friends easy access. Because like it or not, even the last of the E30 BMWs are now 22 years old! Sure, with electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, and electrical stuff (what? you can push a button and the window goes down?!), they don’t feel old, but the clock doesn’t stop ticking. You can find this 1991 BMW 318i for sale for $3900 in Encino, CA.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Jeep, Saab, Eagle, BMW

January 7, 2014

Still chronicling the diverse assortment of cars found on the streets of western states, and there’s a lot of material out there. If you were born in the 1970s or later, you probably remember these as fuel-gulping dinosaurs with antiquated styling and wood trim out of the 1970s. But when they were introduced, Jeep Wagoneers were a very early SUV in the modern idiom, equipped with power steering, automatic transmission, and an overhead cam six, several years before Range Rover and nearly two decades ahead of the Ford Explorer. This particular car is one of the last of its kind, and apparently the owner was not interested in the many more modern options available on the market, even before the Exploder showed up.

Hoard Sale – From Alfa to Volvo

December 17, 2013

Most often, sales of large collections are full of a bunch of junk, and only one or two gems. However, when the seller is a retiring European car mechanic, you’re bound to get some interesting finds. The seller’s father was in the business for 30 years, and clearly felt the same about cars as some people feel about dogs, cats, or friends with emotional trauma – they love the idea of a project. This project car collection is for sale in Olympia, WA, with no asking prices, aside from a request not to offer scrap prices (although what that is, is not clear). To start us off, here’s a 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV6 with no obvious damage, although protracted outdoor storage in what looks to be a damp forest will mean it needs a lot.
