Pow, Right in the Kisser – 1967 BMW 1600

February 10, 2016

One of the two key ingredients in BMW’s iconic 2002, the E10 BMW 1600 lives in the shadow of its bigger brother. But the early cars have their own charms, being from a time when we were less concerned about safety, and more about hey look at that shiny thing in each dial! Though a bit down on power, they have everything else that made the 2002 great – tall greenhouse, stark interior, and light, tossable platform. And you can always have the oddball appeal of having that proud “1600” badge on the back of the car, except when it’s been removed by a self-conscious previous owner, like on this 1967 BMW 1600 for sale for $2800 in Portland, OR.

Deuce and a Quarter – 1962 Buick Electra 225

February 9, 2016

Buick’s full size sedan from 1959 to 1990, the Electra opens up doors to some interesting naming practices in the company’s history. Electra was named for one-time president Harlow Curtice’s sister, 225 referred to the car’s length in inches, and the Wildcat 445 designation referred to the mammoth amount of gross-measure torque put out by the 401ci Nailhead V8. 1962 seems to have been the final year for Buick’s version of the GM bubble-top sedan with its trademark dog-leg A-pillar, and as such, some outrageous details like the gigantic tail fins and elaborate use of chrome were toned down, though far from finished. Let’s check out this 1962 Buick Electra 225 for sale for $3900 in Portland, OR.

Ur-Impreza – 1976 Subaru DL Wagon

February 8, 2016

If you have ever read some of the British classic car magazines, you’ll no doubt have noticed the dealer ads showing remarkably preserved examples of middle-of-the-road (by local standards) cars for pretty short money. Of course the relative strength of the pound makes them seem even cheaper, but it seems pretty unusual to find equivalent cars here in North America. Every now and again, though, something interesting comes up, like this 1976 Subaru DL Wagon for sale for $3500 in Seattle, WA.
