Volvo Show, Part 2 – 1990 Volvo 240 DL Wagon

May 25, 2016

If you’re looking for a deal on a Volvo, but the 242 GT is too boy-racer for you, how about a gold 240 wagon? Seriously, all it needs is a public radio sticker and a 1980s child seat in the back and you’ll throw every member of Generation X who grew up in a major urban area back in time. The great thing about the wagon is, you don’t give up anything in terms of the basic platform, and you get more room. To offset the extra weight of the slightly bigger body, the 240’s engine had an extra half point in compression by 1990, so you got a 7hp boost. And the same chassis and engine performance parts bolt on here, so you can have your cake and load it full of luggage too. Check out this 1990 Volvo 240 DL for sale for $4500 in northwestern (likely Portland) Oregon.

Ur-Impreza – 1976 Subaru DL Wagon

February 8, 2016

If you have ever read some of the British classic car magazines, you’ll no doubt have noticed the dealer ads showing remarkably preserved examples of middle-of-the-road (by local standards) cars for pretty short money. Of course the relative strength of the pound makes them seem even cheaper, but it seems pretty unusual to find equivalent cars here in North America. Every now and again, though, something interesting comes up, like this 1976 Subaru DL Wagon for sale for $3500 in Seattle, WA.

Northwest Profit – 1980 Subaru 1600DL

January 14, 2015

There’s something to be said for sending cars to their most suited environment – their adoptive homes, where their strengths are appreciated, and their idiosyncrasies are overlooked, or even embraced as character. That’s why the Peugeot 504’s true home is somewhere on the African continent, biodiesel Mercedes sedans from the 1970s and 1980s are best off in Berkeley/San Francisco, and why, if you let go of the wheel on an older Subaru, it’ll naturally gravitate towards the Pacific Northwest. So here’s your formula: 1) Purchase low-mile classic Scoobie; 2) Drive to Portland or Seattle; 3) Sell for a profit! Check out this Subaru 1600 DL sedan for sale for $2800 in downtown San Jose, CA.
