German Bobcat – 1978 Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta (development code: Bobcat) went by largely unnoticed in the North American market – they had decent success until they were killed off to be replaced by the Escort, but ask most people now and they’ll think of the Festiva, or worse, the Aspire. Which is really not fair, since they were great little cars that were quite successful elsewhere. Light, front-wheel-drive, with strut suspension in the front, these are said to be fun to drive in spite of their low-powered engines. Interesting Parts – 1976 BMW 2002

Following a reader request to keep an eye on the price range of featured cars, we’ve got an option here that will help keep things down. While definitely a special car that’s a recognized icon, BMW 2002s are not exactly rare in the classic car world, and the latter, big-bumper cars are considered by many to be less desirable (though retrofitted with home-market chrome bumpers, they look every bit as good). Hot Rod Swede – 1966 Volvo 122S

The great thing about Volvos, aside from their minimalist Swedish design aesthetic and durability, is the fact their rather conservative and plain styling can hide something really fun. And unexpected fun is the best kind – think of the last time you had a surprisingly good meal at that hole in the wall, or hit it off with a new friend. So, you say, what does that metaphor have to do with a red two-door car with a spoiler on the front? Well, it’s a Volvo, so the stock powertrain promises a safe, respectable 95-or-so horsepower, and the 4-speed M41 overdrive transmission promises relaxed freeway cruising.
