Karmann TR – 1976 Triumph TR6

April 3, 2014

With the recent booms and busts of our up-and-down economy, different classic cars have been affected in different ways in the market. Everybody knows vintage Porsches are up, but it behooves every car nut to also understand what cars are down in order to get a good deal on a car that might have cost more a few years back. A good example of that is the Triumph TR6 – values seem to be down slightly, and this means that cars needing a little effort are easier to snap up. One such car is this 1976 Triumph TR6, for sale for $3950 near Dripping Springs, TX (itself near Austin).

Rusty But Trusty on the Street – Two Alfas, Dodge, and a GMC

March 31, 2014

Nothing deoxidizes the rusty cockles of one’s heart like seeing an older car running around on the street, particularly one that was not too common when new, and even rarer now. So it was quite a surprise seeing this well-known (to SF Bay Area Alfa nuts) 1973 Alfa Romeo Berlina parked on a side street in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, gathering dust. Of course, anything near a busy street tends to gather dust, and while this car is a project from outside appearances, the previous owner had done extensive work on the engine, transmission and suspension before moving out of the area. Hopefully, this car is still being used as intended – the last owner posted on online forums about flying through freeway on-ramps, so it must be in better mechanical shape.

Little Car, Big World – 1974 MG Midget

March 27, 2014

While twin overhead cams, aluminum heads, and 5-speed transmissions are all exciting, there’s something very appealing about a simple little car like the MG Midget. It’s everything you need to define it as a car, and nothing more, much like, say, a pizza margherita or simple pasta and tomato sauce. And true to both, because there’s not a bunch of fancy features to distract the driver/eater, the basic product is a test of its maker’s abilities. Just as some chefs can make a great pizza margherita, so MG made some great sports cars, and with the Midget, they proved that even the most basic, stripped down of sports cars could still be a lot of fun. You can find this 1974 MG Midget for sale for $4000 in Keller, TX.
