Safe Bet – 1973 BMW 2002 (and bonus 1972 2002!)

March 14, 2014

While rare old crocks are what really make us wobbly in the knees, obscure versions of common cars, or even common versions of popular old cars, can also be fun in their own way. Back when cars were still more maintenance-intensive, people still appreciated reliability, hard as that may be to believe, and the cars that were relatively reliable back then make great driver classics. If you can strike that fine balance and exercise them just enough to stay reliable, but not so much as to induce daily-driver levels of wear and tear, you’ll have many easy years ahead of you. And you can increase the likelihood of that working out by doing some preemptive maintenance, which is probably what today’s cars will need. We have a pair of BMW 2002s, starting with this 1973 BMW 2002 for sale for $3200 in San Rafael, CA.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Pontiac and BMW 3-fer

February 24, 2014

As San Francisco is an interesting place for spotting unusual (or at least old) cars, so are Oakland and Berkeley. And for people who live where interesting cars are a not-too-uncommon sight among the hoardes of Priuses, Accords and F150s, you owe it to yourself to not forget to appreciate where you are. Our first car is a 1973 Pontiac Catalina coupe. Wait, you say, Pontiac? Sure, they’re an orphan brand now, but there are loads of those still on the streets! Well, with attrition, some of the less-popular versions of the General’s platforms have become as rare as cars that had much-lower sales numbers when new. Who knows what engine this car has in it – anything from the 350 to the 455, with a less-than-impressive horsepower range of 150 (boohoohoo) to 250 (meh).

Grumpy – 1972 BMW 2002

December 17, 2013

There are many ways to sell a car online, from the one liner to the full photo gallery and description. Somewhere to the left (or right, depending on your proclivities) of center is the angry seller. Perhaps informed by previous experiences on craigslist, their sales approach includes lines like “no lowballs”, “no scammers”, “don’t ask for pictures”, and more. Are they really trying to sell a car? Their ears are probably burning as this post is being typed, and irritation is rising from an unknown source. Depending on your temperament, you can either blow these guys off, or realize your interaction with the seller is relatively brief, especially if what they’re selling is good. And speaking of good, it’s harder and harder to find roundie BMWs for a fair price that are feasible driving projects. Check out this 1972 BMW 2002 for sale in Burbank, CA for $4000.
