It’s pretty interesting that, if you’re willing to be flexible in your choice of car, you can still find some pretty decent deals. Generally speaking, Jensen Healeys fall into that category, together with various Fiat products and perhaps Triumph TR7s. Only the Jensen Healey gives you a double-overhead cam, sixteen valve engine developed by Lotus, though. That said, the J-H is also the only car to share quite a few parts with some low-rent Vauxhall products, so set your expectations accordingly. Nonetheless, it was supposed to be pretty decent to drive, and its public image suffered because it was released before it was fully developed. September 28, 2015Douze Snooze – 1971 Renault 12 TL Automatique
September 26, 2015The Renault 12 was never meant to be an unusual or special car – the original brief was to build a car that had plenty of space, a small engine, and was inexpensive. But, because it was French, it still had style in the way a cheap American or Japanese econo-sedan would not. You could definitely call it ugly style, but it was still style. In spite of the looks, Renault must have got it right, because not only did the 12 survive 11 years of production as a regular Renault, but it went on to be built for another 26 years in South America, Turkey, Romania and elsewhere. While the rest of the world got the 60hp Cléon engine, the American 12 was fitted with the alloy 1.6 from the 16, good for 65hp and likely more torque. The Voiture – 1982 Renault Le Car
September 25, 2015As it is somewhere in the vast unwritten RustyButTrusty mission to catalog the majority of the Alfettas on the market, so it is too for Renault’s LeCar. And thank goodness it’s an attainable goal, unlike covering something as common as the Alfa Romeo 164. And for something that was considered a throwaway car by some many people, it’s interesting to see there are a couple each year in very good condition. Another bright note is these were never sold with an automatic transmission – probably part of the key to their demise here – so you won’t get lumbered with a gorgeous survivor running an underdeveloped/slow/recalcitrant drivetrain.
