Son of 205 GTi – 1999 Peugeot 106 S16

September 24, 2015

The Peugeot 106 S16 (16 valves in French, known as the 106 GTI everywhere else) was recognized as the spiritual successor of the 205 GTi – while the 206 grew and became less nimble, the 106 maintained the lightweight, tossable character of its older brother. Of course, none of that mattered in North America since Peugeot withdrew from the market in 1991, and had no success here with its compact cars. Nonetheless, they have their fans on this continent, and one of them is selling this 1999 Peugeot 106 S16 in Kelowna, BC for C$3900 (about $2900 today).

850 in Drag – 1970 Siata Spring

September 23, 2015

Siata’s Spring is kind of an odd duck. Can you imagine the discussions between management and design? “Well, Gianni, Alfa Romeo is doing a Gran Sport Quattroruote Zagato to celebrate their heritage by dropping a miniaturized 6C1750 GS Spider Zagato body on their Giulia platform. And in America, everyone is putting 1940 Ford and Rolls Royce hoods on their VW Beetles. We’re falling behind the market here, so let’s get on with it and throw something together so people know Fiata (?) has still got it!” And thus, the Spring was born – a classic car that does not draw on Siata’s distinguished history (or Fiat’s, or anyone else’s), rather looking like an anonymized picture of a classic car you see in one of those ads for body shops in the phone book. Check out this 1970 Siata Spring for sale for $3900 in San Diego, CA.

So Nice – 1973 Saab Sonett III

September 22, 2015

If you like quirky or unusual sports cars, you could do a lot worse than looking at the offerings from Sweden. Volvo’s P1800 and Saab’s Sonett are two very different cars, though they do have one basic thing in common – they use plenty of parts from their more common siblings. As for the differences, the P1800 is more of a luxurious, GT-type car, while the Sonett was more of a reasonably-priced sports car, up against cars like the Opel GT, Datsun 240Z, and Triumph GT6+. In period, its performance was far from the front of the pack, but now it’s an interesting artifact of an extinct company. Check out this 1973 Saab Sonett III for sale for $3600 in Sweet Home, OR (wait, what?).
