If someone said they wanted to show you a truck from Texas, would you have expected this? Well, the Suzuki Carry and its ilk have been popular for quite a while among landscapers and owners of large properties. While they’re not legal for on-road use, they function pretty well as a sort of motorized wheel barrow, bigger than adapted golf carts and with a more conventional drive train. Powered by a 359cc two-stroke inline 2-cylinder putting out a robust 28hp, they featured a watered-down version of the previous (L40) generation’s Giugiaro styling, and could haul up to 770 lb. And while there’s not much engine in there, they’re pretty light and the front-mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout (with little weight over the back) means there might be some tail-out fun to be had, particularly on dirt roads. March 25, 2014Going Abroad – 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfasud
March 24, 2014If there’s one car that is simultaneously fantastic and likely to have done its manufacturer in if imported to North America, it’s the Alfasud. Amazing to drive, with great handling and a rev-happy flat four, and yet saddled with indifferent quality and unconventional interior design, the ‘sud would have pushed its maker out of the North American market 15 years sooner. It’s too bad, because one could arguably say it was one of the first premium small cars, ages before BMW and Mercedes figured out that compact cars needed to be part of their product lineup. You can find this 1975 Alfa Romeo Alfasud for sale for €2500 ($3459 today).
Going Abroad – 1965 Innocenti-Morris IM3
March 21, 2014As we saw today with the Alfa Romeo Arna, it was not uncommon for Italian manufacturers to build other nations’ cars under license. Here is another example of the practice – the Innocenti-Morris IM3. Innocenti had already built two BMC cars under license, the A40 and the 950 Spider (based on the Spridget). It had the twin-carburetor 1100cc engine, altered front-end styling, a different dash cluster, and other more minor details. You can find this 1965 Innocenti-Morris IM3 for sale for €1500 ($2069) in Milan, Italy.
