I Go, Yu Go, We All Scream For… Oh. – 1986 Yugo GV

August 19, 2014

So the Yugo was a big national scandal, scam, or something. In the light of crazy inflation in the early 1980s, and lingering fuel economy awareness from the 1970s crises, manufacturers perceived a demand for small, bargain basement cars, such that you could buy a new Yugo or Hyundai for the price of a used Honda or VW. And hey, what was good enough for Comrade Miroslav or Jay Park should be just fine for Earl too, right? These ultimate throwaway cars have for the most part disappeared from our roads, and while the Excel was a boring cheap heap, the Yugo actually had a little fun built in that makes them appeal to the same folks crazy enough to love Fiat 128s and X1/9s. Check out this 1986 Yugo GV for sale with bidding at $1780 and 6 days left to go in El Cajon, CA.

Better Than It Looks – 1963 Renault Caravelle

August 19, 2014

After yesterday’s Mercedes 250 feature, here’s another car that’s not afraid to go slow. Don’t rush me, it says, I still need to have a croissant with un petit cafe, light une cigarette, and check on this year’s grape harvest. For 1962, the Floride, based on the Dauphine, was moved onto the R8 platform, and upgraded with a 956cc Sierra engine for a blustering 48hp – reasonably competitive with cars like the VW Karmann Ghia, Triumph Spitfire/Herald, and Fiat 850. However, it was one of the biggest and likely heaviest cars in its class. Nonetheless, how many other Ghia/Frua designed cars can you find at this price point? Check out this 1963 Renault Caravelle for sale with bidding at $2125, reserve not met, and less than one day left to go in Lake Worth, FL.

Not What It Appears – 1967 VW Beetle

August 18, 2014

So, it’s another VW Beetle. Sure, it’s the desirable 1967, but we’re looking at a 1493cc flat four with a meager 53hp. And because the owner is either pretentious or ironic, there’s a Faux-Royce hood on it, and what looks like a rather rough rattle canned red metallic paint job. But wait, there’s more – can you see the wheels from a Toyota Tacoma, and the fake side pipes, and the nasty JC Whitney side mirrors? Why are we interested in this car? Read on to learn more about this 1967 VW Beetle for sale for $3800 in Hayward, CA.
