Oddball Mercedes – 1977 Mercedes 230

Quick, think of an oddball Mercedes! What’s the first thing that comes to mind? The R-class cross-over? The pre-war W23, W28 and W30 with their rear-mounted four-cylinder engines? The Unimog? Well, yes, those are all rather odd cars. But how about throwing in W123 into that question? Most people will think of the slow diesel-powered sedans, but you’re not most people, so you’ll know that from 1977-1978 in the North American market, you could get your W123 sedan powered by the 2.3-liter, four-cylinder M115 engine. Mercedes’ W123 series of cars has received many compliments over the years: safe, solid, heirloom car, and so forth. But nobody who’s ever been behind the wheel of a BMW or a Saab turbo would call it sporty. So what to do if you appreciate the qualities of the W123, but find it to be just a bit, well, slow? Well, forget the naturally aspirated diesels, with their two-digit horsepower numbers, and the price-inflated eco-hipster, bio-diesel conversion favorite, the 300D Turbodiesel. RustyButTrusty on the Street – Alfa, Mini, Mercedes, Volvo

Welcome back to RustyButTrusty on the Street, where we take a look at recent sightings of people using classic cars as they were originally intended. First up is the RustyButTrust 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider, which was a surprise participant in the 2014 Motherlode 400 Rally since the Alfetta was still down for repair. 40ish classic cars hit the small town of Hornitos, CA for lunch, and you have to wonder what the locals thought at being swarmed by that many old cars at once. In the background, you can see another participant’s 1969 GTV. The driving on this year’s Motherlode Rally was amazing as usual, with more technical driving than some other vintage rallies and two nights at the same location so you needn’t drag everything with you.
