Stop Falking Around – 1960 Peugeot 403

October 21, 2013

It’s time for a bit of a rant – does it drive you nuts how *every* time there’s an article about a vintage Peugeot online, some wise guy writes a reply referencing Columbo? It doesn’t matter if it’s a 504, 404 (wagon, cabriolet, coupe or sedan), 403, or 203, someone has to mention it (ugh, and now it’s happened here too – the irony is not lost!). Referencing a TV series that had its last heyday roughly 20 years ago is about as creative as bringing up the old Fix-It-Again-Tony or “be the first at the scene of the accident” lines for a Fiat or VW bus. Okay, rant over, let’s focus on an actual car. You can find this 1960 Peugeot 403 sedan for $2000 in Mill Valley, CA, just outside San Francisco.

Snow Mobile – 1986 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon

October 15, 2013

Considering their popularity as cult cars, and their reputation for durability, the pre-1990s Subarus seem to have largely disappeared from the roads. Perhaps, as with Alfas, you’ll see more of these if you’re in the Subaru (or Japanese Classic Car) scene, but for your average Johnny-on-the-street, they might as well have gone the way of the Peugeot or the Yugo. While they’re not terribly fast, and in fact are slow, they get bonus points for being leaders with the all-wheel-drive wagon package, and having a flat four engine. It’s not an original question, but what has been done to retrofit the older cars with turbocharged powertrains? While you’re contemplating that question, take a look at this 1986 Subaru GL 4WD wagon, listed for a mere $1400 in Santa Clara, CA.

No Honeys Needed – 1969 Austin America with Honda Engine

October 11, 2013

With all the Austin Americas featured here, you’d think they sold in vast numbers in America. Well, they didn’t do too badly until it became clear they weren’t up to handling American roads in combination with American car maintenance habits. The likely underdeveloped automatic didn’t help things either. Well, here’s a car that should solve all the reliability problems, any issues you have with lacking power, and the engine itself will be low maintenance to boot. IF you can get it installed. Honda engine conversions are not unusual among the Mini crowd, so obviously that translates to their big brother too, right? Right? You can find this 1969 Austin Hondamerica for $1800 as a full kit, or for $500 without the Honda bits, in Federal Way, WA, just north of Seattle.
