Group Siblings – 1958 Borgward Isabella Kombi and 1960 Lloyd LT600 Van

May 23, 2014

Welcome back to the wonderful and sometimes weird world of European post-war cars. The Borgward Isabella, as mentioned here before, was a middle-class sedan that was slated to fill the gap in between everyman cars like Volkswagen and Opel, and the upper class of Mercedes-Benz and perhaps Glas. As an entry-luxury car, it faced one significant competitor – BMW. And that well-connected upstart was ultimately implicated in political conspiracies whose authors suggest that the government’s failure to continue to sustain them was due to the influence of BMW’s backers. Anyhow, for a while there they had some interesting cars that were well-engineered and provided sporting (for the time) performance combined with the austere German interpretation of post-war luxury. Have a look at this 1958 Borgward Isabella Kombi for sale for $2500 in Stanwood, WA.

Alert! Alert! – 1959 Toyopet Crown Custom Wagon

March 11, 2014

The warning is coming a little late, but if there had been a warning in 1958 about Toyota’s first tentative step in the American swimming pool, what would the Big 3 have said? “So you’re telling me this pipsqueak manufacturer from Japan that made milling machines, has a car that looks like our 2/3-scale European Vauxhalls, Opels, and Fords (which by the way, nobody is buying), and can’t even build a V8 or an automatic transmission is going to dominate the world market in 50 years? What kind of pills are you taking, boy?” So you can’t entirely blame them for being surprised when ten years later, the Corona experienced an astronomic sales climb that forced them to think seriously about small cars. Or should have (instead, we got Pintos, Vegas, and Chevettes). Check out one of Toyota’s earliest forays, this 1959 Toyopet Crown Custom wagon, for sale with bidding at $3550 and just over one day left to go, in Moreno Valley, CA.

QSW – 1986 VW Quantum Syncro Wagon

February 5, 2014

It’s pretty odd how when you find one rare car, another two or three pop up at the same time. After featuring a B2 Passat Avant (known as the Quantum Syncro Wagon in the North American market, or QSW), another one popped up in substantially better condition, even if the color is not as attractive. You can find this 1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro wagon for sale for $2500 in South Everett, WA (the same town, even!). Everett is clearly a QSW hotspot.
