First V12 – 1989 BMW 750 iL

September 13, 2013

BMW today has a large variety of engines – inline 4, inline 6, v8, v10, v12 – but take the time machine back to 1987 and think of what your options were. You had 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-series models, and depending on where you lived you had a choice of inline 4 and inline 6 engines. The 750 iL was the first to blow that 30ish-year convention out of the water, offering two side-by-side M20 inline sixes in BMW’s first V12 engine for 300hp and 330 lb.-ft. of thrust. You can find this first-year BMW 750 iL for $2500 in the Fort Worth area of Texas.

PNW Special – How Hard Could It Be? 1980 Saab 99 GLi

September 2, 2013

Last week, we here at RustyButTrusty were up in the Pacific Northwest (which, incidentally, is getting a new nickname of Pacific Northwarm – instead of Northwet – after this summer). As usual, the scenery was inspiring, but there was a major lack of interesting old cars on the road compared to the old-car-loving San Francisco Bay area. That didn’t stop us from spotting an MGB, a Citroen DS, a BMW 2002, and the resident Alfa Milano on Airport Road in Everett. However, upon arrival back home, we were shocked and disappointed to discover that not one, but two Saab 99s had popped up on craigslist in Skagit County, home of the RustyButTrusty in-laws. Find the first of two, a Saab 99 GLi, in Bow, WA, just north of Mount Vernon, WA (where the I5 bridge collapsed).

Red Rover – 1980 Rover 3500 SD1

August 22, 2013

With only around 1200 cars sold in the US through 1980 and 1981, it’s fairly rare to find a Rover SD1 for sale. However, if they were going to survive anywhere, it would be the west coast. Sadly, most remaining examples have fallen into decay, which is somewhat surprising given the American-based V8, good handling and arguably the most elegant 4-door sedan styling of its time. And here we have two projects which, when combined, will never almost certainly make one fantastic driver. Even better, you could make a good driver out of the good parts, and a BTCC-inspired LeMons racer from what’s left – what could possibly go wrong? Find the most complete car for $1500 in Long Beach, CA.
