While the Scirocco was one of the first applications of a stylish coupe/GT body on ordinary front-wheel-drive econobox mechanicals, it was by no means the first to make use of cheap underpinnings as a basis for a sporty car. Much like the Ford Capri, Isuzu Piazza/Impulse, and Corolla GT-S, it allowed younger buyers to have some sporting experience while not spending too much money, and much like those, it received drivetrain upgrades to go with its rakish design. And so in 1986, VW introduced their Scirocco with a 16 valve engine, putting out 123bhp and making the 0-60 run in around 8 seconds, quite respectable for the time. You can find this 1987 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for C$3000 in Vancouver, BC.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Mercedes, Alfa, and a VW on Street View

November 26, 2013

Today’s theme is that sometimes the cool cars are close by, and sometimes they are far away. But the key is that people are out there using them, and even if they get dirty or chipped, they’re not half as much fun sitting in the garage. The first car is in an office development fairly close to RustyButTrusty world headquarters. R107 Mercedes SLs are not such a rare find, and would not ordinarily show up in this context, but this small-bumper SL is probably a 1972 or 1973 model. Complete with personalized blue California plates, it looks the part of the executive from one of those newfangled chip manufacturers. Can you imagine, some people were born and made it nearly through high school without Mercedes revealing a new SL?

Karmann Coupe – 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco S

October 24, 2013

As a replacement for the antique-looking Karmann Ghia, which dated back to 1955, VW designed a new replacement. Heavily influenced by the wedge cars of the period – take a look at yesterday’s Alfetta GTV, a Lotus Esprit, or even a Lamborghini Countach – they successfully came up with a new interpretation of the sports-coupe-on-econobox-platform story. As they were inexpensive cars, many have disappeared, having succumbed to youthful overexuberance combined with youthful budgets. But there are still a few around if you look hard, and that’s how you can find this 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco S for sale for $1499 in Puyallup, WA.
