Not Shakespearean – 1974 Saab Sonett III (plus bonus ’72!)

March 10, 2014

In the world of affordable and unusual sports cars, it doesn’t get much more unusual than the Saab Sonett. Based, as many of its competitors were, on a more pedestrian sibling, the Sonett featured the same 65hp Ford-based V4. (Wait a minute, did he just call a Saab pedestrian??) By the angular 1970 redesign, the rear glass had sprouted hinges (replacing the rear flap found on the Sonett II), the clamshell front end had been reduced to a rather small hood with very limited access, and the car got a floor shifter and optional air conditioning. And thanks to clean air rules, power went down until the end of production in 1974. Nonetheless, the Sonett III was the most popular of all Sonetts, with roughly 5 times the number of Sonett IIs produced. And so they are most likely to show up here, where, aout halfway down the page, you can find this 1974 Saab Sonett III for sale for $3300 in Snohomish, WA.

RustyButTrusty on the Street – Jeep, Saab, Eagle, BMW

January 7, 2014

Still chronicling the diverse assortment of cars found on the streets of western states, and there’s a lot of material out there. If you were born in the 1970s or later, you probably remember these as fuel-gulping dinosaurs with antiquated styling and wood trim out of the 1970s. But when they were introduced, Jeep Wagoneers were a very early SUV in the modern idiom, equipped with power steering, automatic transmission, and an overhead cam six, several years before Range Rover and nearly two decades ahead of the Ford Explorer. This particular car is one of the last of its kind, and apparently the owner was not interested in the many more modern options available on the market, even before the Exploder showed up.

Two Swedes Walk Into 2.8bar – 1983 and 1985 Saab 900 Turbos

December 4, 2013

In the excitement surrounding the resumption of Saab production (even if at a trickle), we turned up a couple more classic 900s. While these older cars seem to be more in keeping with the soul of Saab, as opposed to some of the rather porcine GM-era cars, their devotion to the cause of great engineering is also partly why Saab is in its current predicament (see Lancia). Failure analysis aside, these make great classic cars, and we have two, presented in no particular order. First is this 1983 Saab 900 turbo for sale in Bellingham, WA for $2500.
