Old Yeller – 1980 Rover SD1 3500

March 17, 2014

Rover will be forever forgotten in US car history, but for a few nutcases who cling on to one of the thousand SD1s built for the US market, or any of the earlier cars. However, they really do deserve to be remembered for what is arguably one of the most successful designs for a 4-door fastback sedan. Inspired by the Ferrari 365 Daytona and a Pininfarina BMC study, it had a swooping roofline before that trend was “started” by Audi and others in the late 1990s. And somehow, among other fastback contemporaries like the Lancia Beta sedan, the Saab 99/900 5-doors, and the Chevrolet Citation, it managed to be long, low and elegant where the others were rather gawky. You can find this 1980 Rover SD1 3500 for sale for a mere $850 in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, CA.

Anti-Neue Klasse – 1968 Rover 2000TC

March 12, 2014

As proof that you can sell any kind of car in the coastal states, even if in limited numbers, there’s a not-insignificant supply of Rovers (primarily P6 sedans) living in northern California. Every so often, one pops up for sale as a reminder that these are significant cars, taking much inspiration from Citroen’s DS, and adding some of their own ingenuity. If seeing these cost-no-object innovative manufacturers (like Lancia, Saab, and Alfa) die out doesn’t make you just a little sad, you should probably remove this page from your bookmarks and shut your browser down. You can find this 1968 Rover P6 2000TC (that’s twin carb, not twin cam) for sale for $3000 in Sacramento, CA.

Commonwealth Saloons – 1967 Rover P5 Mark III 3-Liter

March 4, 2014

A little higher up the pay scale from the Austin A55 Cambridge is the junior executive Rover. Not quite a Jaguar, far from a Rolls or Bentley, but maybe on a level with the Humber Super Snipe is the Rover P5. For some reason, Rover decided to make a 4-door coupe 4 decades before it was cool for the Germans to do it. Perhaps this was Rover’s attempt at going up against the more rakish Jaguars, or maybe one of Rover’s design directors spent some time in America checking out the hot rod scene. Either way, it makes for an interesting look, and gives it a level of elegance not found in the regular saloon. You can find this 1967 Rover P5 Mark III 3-liter Coupe for sale for $2000 in Chemainus, BC, on Vancouver Island.
