While the Volkswagen cars built at the Westmoreland, PA are an interesting sidebar in VW’s production history (together with the South African CitiGolf and the Mexican Caribe), but their compromised interior design and quality, together with softened suspension, mean they’re not viewed all that fondly by enthusiasts. That said, survivors are few and far between at this point, and it’s interesting to look back and see what a former Chevrolet executive thought was the right strategy for selling more Rabbits in North America. Westmoreland or Bust! – 1980 VW Rabbit Diesel
June 25, 2014Swedish Monday – 1978 Saab 99 EMS
June 23, 2014If the lines of the classic Volvo 240 seem too ordinary, or too square, consider the Swedish alternative – Saab. It offers a competitive capacity for all your stuff, greater sporting lineage, and is wrapped in arguably more creative styling. That said, it’s still quite utilitarian in the Swedish idiom, with simple, clean styling and longevity that can equal its Volvo compatriots. Due to their shorter production lifespan, fewer Saab 99s remain, so when one comes up for sale, it’s almost compulsory to feature it here. Take a look at this 1978 Saab 99 EMS for sale for $2200 in North Albany, OR.
Eighties Vee Dub Pair – 1987 VW Scirocco 16v and 1984 VW Rabbit GTI
June 17, 2014While the second generation Scirocco, with its giant impact bumpers and somewhat blander styling, doesn’t warm the cockles of our icy cold hearts like the first generation car does, it’s still quite a compelling drivetrain package in a very 1980s body style. That 16-valve engine was on every young gearhead’s list back when they were new, perhaps more in the GTI than the Scirocco, but no matter – 26 years (wait, what?) of perspective makes you see things somewhat differently. If you’re not swayed, check out this 1987 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for $3500 in Washington County, west of Portland, OR.
