1970 Opel Kadett

August 5, 2009

This might be a little obscure, but then, so is my angle on this whole hobby. I’ve always wanted an excuse to share some German song lyrics, so here they are, relevant because they’re about cars:

Jeder Popel fährt ‘nen Opel / Every booger drives an Opel
Jeder Affe fährt ‘nen Ford / Every monkey drives a Ford
Jeder Blödmann fährt ‘nen Porsche / Every idiot drives a Porsche
Jeder Arsch ‘nen Audi Sport / Every ass an Audi Sprot
Jeder Spinner fährt ‘nen Manta / Every wacko drives a Manta
Jeder Dödel Jaguar / Every muppet Jaguar
Nur Genießer fahren Fahrrad / Only bon vivants ride a bicycle
Und sind immer schneller da / And are always faster there

I think it’s by a German group called die Prinzen… basically insulting all drivers of the above-mentioned cars and saying how you get there quicker by bike. If you’ve seen any German city centers lately, you’ll no doubt agree.

Anyway, the first line always stuck in my head and came back to mind when I saw this cute little primrose yellow Opel Kadett, listed in Black Hawk, CO by the original owner for $3000. There’s something to be said for older cars in period colors, and this color suits this subcompact just right, second only to the Rallye package with driving lights and stripes.

Fiesta! Party! 1978 Ford Fiesta S

July 31, 2009

Thanks to its looking much like a VW Rabbit, this car has appealed to me for a long time. I like the simple design, and I like the promise of European handling in a small car that’s pretty common, has great parts availability, and is frequently modified for sporting events. Unfortunately, all US-market Fiestas were sold here from 1978 – 1980 and are therefore not smog-exempt, so you’re still in for that. Unfortunately, the Fiesta was at that point replaced by the Escort. Which would you rather have – a car named after a party, or one named after a high-class lady of the sort accompanying certain politicians?

Surprisingly, there are a fair amount of these cars out there on the market if you’re willing to travel a bit. This 1978 Ford Fiesta S in Las Vegas, listed on the dealer’s website as well as a couple of other sites, looks like a pretty tidy example. It does seem to have some minor dents from storage, as well as a missing outer door handle and inner door panel, but other things point to it having had fairly light usage.

Hasenpfeffer: 1984 VW GTI

July 10, 2009

Going a little bit more recent for this one, but I’ve got several reasons to include this as a good, affordable car to play with. Back in 1981 when we moved to California, my parents’ first car (after looking at a number of old Beetles) was a silver 1980 Rabbit L, one of the cars built in Westmoreland, PA. I washed the car when I was a kid, and learned to drive on it in the Foothill College parking lot when I was 14. More importantly, I think GTIs are actually a good investment. Yeah, you’d have to think a little longer term for this, but this is one of those cars kids lusted after in the 1980s, kind of like kids lusted after a GTO or a Cobra in the sixties. Within a few years, these people will be getting close to the empty nest stage, and will be looking to spend their extra cash fulfilling the dreams of their youths. Like owning a GTI.

But lucky you, you’re thinking ahead and fulfilling that dream right now, with this 1984 GTI on vw.vortex.com in Campbell, CA for a mere $2600. So many of the GTIs for sale these days are up to their ears in modifications, many of them half done, but this is a complete, original-looking car. The only deviation is a cat-back 3″ exhaust.
