Bargain BMW – 1979 E12 528i

December 11, 2009

Some of my earliest car memories are of riding in the back seat of a 1975 530i automatic, dark blue with a black vinyl interior (and a black vinyl roof, apparently to cover up roll-over damage). The car was equipped with steel wheels with hubcaps instead of the common turbine-style wheels you see on late 1970s BMWs, thermal reactors to clean the exhaust, and had a center-mount fuel-filler next to the license plate. It was apparently a bit of a pig to drive and went through brakes or tires fairly quickly. After 5 years of Montreal winters, it was succumbing to the salt, was given a quickie respray, and sold on to someone who planned to drive it cross-country.

This car is arguably a better evolution of the E12 – it has a manual 4-speed, normal exhaust system with catalytic converter, and while it has 7 fewer horsepower, the later engine was not subject to the reliability issues of the earlier one (admittedly, if the car’s still alive by now, it’s probably been resolved). It does still come in the very appropriate dark blue, with a blue cloth interior that should make riding in a car with weak or no a/c tolerable. It’s also a California car that’s now in Las Vegas, so rust should not be an issue. Most importantly, it’s on eBay with no reserve and an opening bid of $1500, with no bids and just over a day left to go as of this writing.

Type 3 Times Two – 1971 VW Squareback & 1972 VW Fastback

November 27, 2009

Having recently read something about the pancake-engine Type 3 Volkswagens having more power, which I realize may be untrue, I got inspired to try to find one of these for sale within the RustyButTrusty budget (about $3K). Oddly enough for something called a Volkswagen, these are not really priced for das Volk, either being complete heaps with body or mechanical damage and 3-figure prices, or restored/survivor cars in the high 4-figure or low 5-figure range. I was also hoping for the earlier 1960s Type 3 with the more delicate lights and chrome bumpers that give much more of a 1960s European family car feeling. My other mistaken assumption was the oddball Type 3 cars would be more reasonable, much like many other cars documented here. But, no such luck, so I looked at the 1970s cars. Even that was hard, but I did manage to find a couple of interesting examples.

The main feature is a 1971 VW Squareback in yellow. There’s been recent work to the interior and the injectors, and it only seems to have one small dent. Notice the quad (!!!) exhaust tips poking out the rear end. The VW logo is in an odd location at the lower left corner of the hatch, and the wheels are mismatched, so I’d check for previous crash damage repair. The pale yellow does lend it a bit of the feel of the earlier cars – the later ones tended to show up in more bright colors like orange. Find this car in Priest River/Newport, WA, near Spokane, for $2400.

Leave it to Bavaria – 1970 BMW 2800

November 10, 2009

Here’s something a bit less rare and unusual, but a way for you to get your E9 BMW kicks on an Alfetta budget. These cars enjoyed the same powertrain and suspension as their much prettier sisters, but have not suffered the significant appreciation in recent years, nor are they as rustprone. If you’ve ever thought of buying one of these, we should probably talk. On a personal note, my first memory of one of these was riding in a tan ’73 Bavaria my parents had as a loaner from Canbeck in Montreal while their ’75 530i was in for service over a weekend. My defining memory of this car is that it smelled like gas, which probably has a lot to do with my love for old car smells as an adult.

This particular car is a pretty early E3, being badged 2800 and having the wider tail lights that, while less tidy, are more visually interesting. The car also carries a lot more chrome, which gives it much more of a 60s look. It also has a cool 2800 badge in the grill, which seems to mostly be a Euro feature – could that point to the origins of this one? Something about the chrome grill and those not-so-clear headlights makes me want to paint the lenses orange and get a French plate for the bumper. Find the car here, listed in Contra Costa county for $2650.
