Be Vewy, Vewy Quiet – 1978 VW Rabbit C

May 31, 2013

Seems I’m always looking to recreate the past or something – yesterday afternoon, while digging through listings for a completely different car, I stumbled upon a car from my past. Ordinarily, I would curse the advertiser for using misleading keywords on their listing, but in this case, it’s a 1978 VW Rabbit C, which is very close to the 1980 VW Rabbit L on which I learned to drive. In a way, it’s quite surprising how rare these have become, given their historical significance. However, they were cheap drivers for most people (including my parents), so most rusted to pieces or cost more to repair than they were worth. Fortunately, that fate didn’t befall this car, a 1978 model in the most basic “C” trim level, available in Tacoma, WA for $2000.

Trunkless – 1970 Opel GT

May 24, 2013

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated with Opels. Maybe it’s because they’re orphans here, maybe it’s because of the curvy lines of the GT and Manta, or maybe it’s because one of my first car rides in Germany was in the back seat of my grandfather’s Opel (probably a Commodore Coupe, although it’s hard for me to say since I was only 5!). Either way, while they’re mainstream cars in Europe, here they are cult favorites, of which the most popular model is the GT. Today’s feature is not so rusty, and probably not so trusty either, but the fun is in getting there, no? It’s a 1970 model here in South Charlotte, NC for $2500.

Breaking the Law – 1975 BMW 2002

May 19, 2013

You may have wondered over the past couple years where RustyButTrusty has been. Lately he didn’t seem so interested in you, or the cars he wrote about so regularly. In spite of the title, which suggests he was in jail for some kind of white collar crime, he was actually taking a break to focus on family and career. Depending on your perspective, good fortune or fate has brought him back to write here again. And so here we have our first feature car in a long time, a 1975 BMW 2002.

Oh, why the title? There’s a fairly recent addition to the fleet. The Lancia Beta Berlina moved along a couple of years back (if you look, you can see the new owner has it listed for sale) and there is now another vehicle which has taken its place: a 1972 BMW 2002 tii. So far, the cars I’ve written about and purchased have been no more than a few thousand dollars and often a little frayed around the edges. While technically the new member of the fleet fulfills a couple of the criteria, I defy anyone to find a running, driving 2002 tii in that price range! Anyway, see the Fleet section in the near future for updates on that.

On to our subject car – a refrigerator white 1975 BMW 2002. Prices for these cars seem to be steadily going up, but if you look around, you can still find some apparent deals. So you can find an unmolested-looking example for $2500 in our state’s lovely capitol, Sacramento, CA.
