Island Special – 1971 BMW 2800CS

October 7, 2014

BMW’s E9 series of cars is destined to be a high value future classic. Perhaps it won’t rise to the insane heights of Porsche’s 356 and 911, but it’s a classic shape, and its BMW siblings and Italian cousins (Alfa’s GTV and 2600 coupes) are already rising with the tide. Since E9s were never terribly cheap, always having their E3 sedan cousins to look down at, it’s always a pleasant surprise to find an intact E9 for a reasonable price, even if it is not a runner. And what could possibly go wrong with a non-running 2800CS with some rust in a seaside setting? Check out this 1971 BMW 2800CS for sale for $3000 in Kailua Kona, HI.

Powder Bug – 1972 VW Beetle Convertible

October 2, 2014

It’s easy enough to find a cheap convertible, and to find a cheap Beetle, but to find an affordable VW Beetle convertible is not the easiest task. Most are complete piles with a shredded roof and sunbaked paint, or nicely preserved/restored with a corresponding price. If you’re looking for a little taste of that 1940s touring convertible experience, with the large pram-style folding top and almost-separate fenders, you should look no further than the VW Beetle convertible. Check out this 1972 VW Beetle convertible for sale for $4000 in Los Gatos, CA.

What Is Wrong – 1983 Mercedes 500 SEL

October 2, 2014

If you’re an old car nut who spends a significant amount of time scouring the various online listing sites for deals, interesting cars, and some combination of those, you probably think you have a good general grasp on the values of, say, an R107 Mercedes SL versus a Renault LeCar. But occasionally, a car pops up to shake your confidence – where apparent condition and price do not add up. Mostly this is on the high-price/poor-condition end of the scale, but in some cases the price is lower than the condition. One example of this is this 1983 Mercedes 500 SEL for sale for $1200 in San Francisco, CA.
