Better than a Beetle – 1967 Morris Minor

August 12, 2009

Well, that headline is bound to annoy somebody. The closest I’ve come to driving either of those two cars is a Karmann Ghia and a Mini Moke, so I speak with a level of authority that can only be recognized on the internet. That said, I’ve always wanted to try a Minor since it’s got that fun little A-series engine, chassis by Issigonis, and cute styling. The other fun part about these, and the reason they’re suitable here, is parts and upgrades are plentiful and cheap, even though they went out of production 38 years ago. You can also go off the deep end and drop in something like a twincam Fiat motor, the virtues of which I’ve expounded upon in other posts. Body style options are also broad, with a 2-door, 4-door, convertible, pickup and wagon (of course the first two are most affordable).

With that as an introduction, here is our first Morris post. The Moggie in question is a 1967 model listed in Millbrae, CA for $2850. Since it’s a later model, it benefits from the raging 48hp of the 1098cc engine. This puts it behind the 1500 Beetle in power, but it makes up for it in reduced weight.

1970 Opel Kadett

August 5, 2009

This might be a little obscure, but then, so is my angle on this whole hobby. I’ve always wanted an excuse to share some German song lyrics, so here they are, relevant because they’re about cars:

Jeder Popel fährt ‘nen Opel / Every booger drives an Opel
Jeder Affe fährt ‘nen Ford / Every monkey drives a Ford
Jeder Blödmann fährt ‘nen Porsche / Every idiot drives a Porsche
Jeder Arsch ‘nen Audi Sport / Every ass an Audi Sprot
Jeder Spinner fährt ‘nen Manta / Every wacko drives a Manta
Jeder Dödel Jaguar / Every muppet Jaguar
Nur Genießer fahren Fahrrad / Only bon vivants ride a bicycle
Und sind immer schneller da / And are always faster there

I think it’s by a German group called die Prinzen… basically insulting all drivers of the above-mentioned cars and saying how you get there quicker by bike. If you’ve seen any German city centers lately, you’ll no doubt agree.

Anyway, the first line always stuck in my head and came back to mind when I saw this cute little primrose yellow Opel Kadett, listed in Black Hawk, CO by the original owner for $3000. There’s something to be said for older cars in period colors, and this color suits this subcompact just right, second only to the Rallye package with driving lights and stripes.

London Bridge is Falling Down – 1966 Datsun Fairlady Roadster

July 27, 2009

Back when I was looking at buying my first sports car, this was among the list of possible cars. They were (as they were originally marketed) a reasonably-priced sports car with European style and near the top of their class (4-cyl. roadsters) in power. As it happens, I ended up with my Alfa, largely because the Datsuns were fairly uncommon, even in the early 90s, and 60s Japanese cars did not have as much cachet as they do now. As with most older sports cars, their shrinking numbers, and the increasing disposable income of buyers, means the cost to purchase one of these has gone up, at least one that fits into the rusty-but-trusty segment of the market.

The subject of today’s post is this 1966 Datsun 1600 Roadster in Placerville, CA for $2500. As one of the earlier cars, this has less power (a still respectable 95hp), but no doubt, fans of the 1600 will tell you a smaller engine revs more sweetly.
