BMW Bounty #1 – 1967 BMW 2000 Neue Klasse

January 28, 2010

Update, 1/28/10: Looks like this car has resurfaced here. No conclusive evidence, but the likelihood of two clean gold 2000 sedans in the Pacific Northwest even existing, much less being for sale one after the next, is pretty slim!

To prove it’s also possible to feature interesting cars from a mainstream brand (from a US perspective), I dug up a couple of old BMWs that were the foundation of their success story, if not the runaway hit the E10 ’02 BMWs were. The E09 sedans came with the common M10 engine that was also found in 2002s, so drivetrain parts should not be the hardest to get. These cars were outfitted a bit more luxuriously than their 2-door siblings, particularly the 2000tilux, which had a fancy walnut dashboard among other things. They were also commonly fitted with an automatic transmission for the US market. If you can get your hands on one of these, it’s always seemed these were a bargain alternative to an E10 – trade a bit of style while still getting the same handling and sportiness. Similar tradeoffs are available with, say, a E3 Bavaria vs. a E9 coupe, or an Alfa GTV vs. a Berlina.

Anyway, let’s get on to the first of this 2-car set. As usual with many of the lower-end craigslist offerings, there’s not a lot of detail and the photography is kind of shabby. However, you can still glean something from reading carefully and looking closely at the pictures. From the brief description, which says it’s nice but not perfect, and it’s a straight car that runs, let’s assume it’s a decent driver, possibly a rolling project. You can find it on craigslist in Bend, OR fitted with the cold weather package including the super-rare optional icicles, for $3000 all told.

BMW Bounty #2 – 1972 BMW Bavaria

December 17, 2009

For part 2 of the BMW installment, I’ve found a 1972 E3 Bavaria in a fairly unlikely place: Wicker Park, IL. Find it on craigslist near Chicago for an asking price of $3400. In Sierra Beige, it looks pretty much like the loaner my parents had for a weekend back in the late 70s (who knew that car would make such an indelible impression on a little kid?). Normally I’m reluctant to post cars from areas that salt their roads, but this car looks on the surface to be pretty clean, and is a good example of the bargain the E3s can be versus the prettier E9 coupes.

This particular car comes with a 4-speed, air conditioning, and a power sunroof. Knowing that, a buyer would want to look for rust in the C-pillars, and honestly, pretty much anywhere else since most 1970s imported cars are rust-prone. The 4-speed is definitely the more durable powertrain choice, and upgrading to a 5-speed is an option if you want more relaxed freeway cruising.

Bargain BMW – 1979 E12 528i

December 11, 2009

Some of my earliest car memories are of riding in the back seat of a 1975 530i automatic, dark blue with a black vinyl interior (and a black vinyl roof, apparently to cover up roll-over damage). The car was equipped with steel wheels with hubcaps instead of the common turbine-style wheels you see on late 1970s BMWs, thermal reactors to clean the exhaust, and had a center-mount fuel-filler next to the license plate. It was apparently a bit of a pig to drive and went through brakes or tires fairly quickly. After 5 years of Montreal winters, it was succumbing to the salt, was given a quickie respray, and sold on to someone who planned to drive it cross-country.

This car is arguably a better evolution of the E12 – it has a manual 4-speed, normal exhaust system with catalytic converter, and while it has 7 fewer horsepower, the later engine was not subject to the reliability issues of the earlier one (admittedly, if the car’s still alive by now, it’s probably been resolved). It does still come in the very appropriate dark blue, with a blue cloth interior that should make riding in a car with weak or no a/c tolerable. It’s also a California car that’s now in Las Vegas, so rust should not be an issue. Most importantly, it’s on eBay with no reserve and an opening bid of $1500, with no bids and just over a day left to go as of this writing.
