As a used car, the E21 BMW 3-series has suffered from being neither fish nor fowl. It wasn’t as pure of a sports sedan as its famous predecessor, and hadn’t yet evolved into the significantly more successful E30 3-series. Part of this was by design at BMW, since they needed a more luxurious entry-level car for the evolving yuppie class to aspire to, and because they needed to accommodate modern safety standards. But part of it was by circumstance – the emissions and safety laws, which had already defaced the later square-light 2002, also had their way with the first 3-series. So what if the 2002 market has slipped from your grasp, but you’re not into the complexity of luxury bits required by moving further into the 1980s E30? Well, you could certainly do worse than buying an E21 that’s had some of the DOT and EPA mess undone. Check out this 1983 BMW 320is for sale for $3500 in Portland, OR.

December 29, 2014Island Special – 1971 BMW 2800CS
October 7, 2014BMW’s E9 series of cars is destined to be a high value future classic. Perhaps it won’t rise to the insane heights of Porsche’s 356 and 911, but it’s a classic shape, and its BMW siblings and Italian cousins (Alfa’s GTV and 2600 coupes) are already rising with the tide. Since E9s were never terribly cheap, always having their E3 sedan cousins to look down at, it’s always a pleasant surprise to find an intact E9 for a reasonable price, even if it is not a runner. And what could possibly go wrong with a non-running 2800CS with some rust in a seaside setting? Check out this 1971 BMW 2800CS for sale for $3000 in Kailua Kona, HI.
A Grand Each – E12 BMW 528i Collection
September 18, 2014Apparently, there are some people who tend to accumulate multiples. Not multiple cars, but several of the same brand, type, and model, as with today’s seller, who has an epic 5 BMW E12 sedans for sale. These cars are arguably equally significant to the 2002 for BMW – even if they haven’t achieved the cult classic popularity of their older brother, they paved the way for BMW’s basic 3-tiered model strategy that carries through to today. Check out this assortment of BMW 528i and 530i cars for sale for $4000 in Reno, NV.
