Keeps on Going – 1986 Mercedes 300D and 1995 E300 Diesel

January 8, 2016

Does it seem that new cars need to be everything to everyone? BMWs are now luxurious, Mercedes are now fast, and Lexus and Infiniti were eating everyone’s lunch for a while until the European makers diluted their brands enough to please someone who can’t make up their mind. But if you want modern things like good fuel mileage, decent reliability and most modern power conveniences (wait, what site are we on here??), together with at least 100,000 miles of life still remaining, the W124 Mercedes sedans with a diesel engine are worth a closer look. Of course, there’s no point in subjecting you, the reader, to boring domestic versions you can find in the classifieds on either coast, so instead, check out this 1986 Mercedes 300D for sale for $2900 in Carmel, CA.

Three Box – 1990 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

January 7, 2016

If you had to pick the top affordable sport sedan or coupe of the early 1990s, where would you land? Despite the general feeling that 1990 was on the tail end of the malaise era, with affordable cars like Toyota’s Tercel doing nothing to dispel that notion, there were good choices from each major region – America with cars like the Ford Probe GT and various captive imports, Asia (mostly Japan at this point) with Nissan’s 240SX and Toyota’s 4AGE-powered cars, and Europe with, uh, Yugo’s GVX? Well, the one that probably really stands out for most of you is the Nissan Sentra SE-R, widely compared to the BMW 2002 and by extension, the Datsun 510. But that’s a shame, because it meant the excellent VW Jetta GLI was in its shadow, with a sweet 16-valve engine, sure-footed handling, and period-typical design cues like BBS wheels, Recaro seats, and a body kit with spoilers and fender flares. Let’s have a look at this 1990 Volkswagen Jetta GLI for sale for $2350 in San Jose, CA.

S2 vs. S4 – 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce

January 6, 2016

Have you ever met two siblings and thought, could these people really have come from the same parents? If you haven’t, you’ll certainly find yourself saying it of the different generations of Alfa Spider. The 1971-1982 Series 2 (S2) Alfa Spider, while fairly comfortable and spacious in its cruising/touring role, is also a fairly raw, raucous sports car whose driving experience is dominated by a wonderful engine note and good handling dampened by cowl shake and live axle quirks. The 1991-1994 Series 4 (S4) Alfa Spider is the older brother, with slightly sharper engine response, stiffer platform, and a much more muted version of the Alfa twincam four, together with narrower leather/alcantara seating and all the electric conveniences and ease of use of a modern (ish) sports car of the 1990s. In spite of that, it has some archaic characteristics like the S2’s live axle peccadilloes, cowl shake, and narrow cabin. To get started, let’s check out this 1973 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for sale for $3500 in San Francisco, CA.
