While the Scirocco was one of the first applications of a stylish coupe/GT body on ordinary front-wheel-drive econobox mechanicals, it was by no means the first to make use of cheap underpinnings as a basis for a sporty car. Much like the Ford Capri, Isuzu Piazza/Impulse, and Corolla GT-S, it allowed younger buyers to have some sporting experience while not spending too much money, and much like those, it received drivetrain upgrades to go with its rakish design. And so in 1986, VW introduced their Scirocco with a 16 valve engine, putting out 123bhp and making the 0-60 run in around 8 seconds, quite respectable for the time. You can find this 1987 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for C$3000 in Vancouver, BC.

QSW – 1986 VW Quantum Syncro Wagon

February 5, 2014

It’s pretty odd how when you find one rare car, another two or three pop up at the same time. After featuring a B2 Passat Avant (known as the Quantum Syncro Wagon in the North American market, or QSW), another one popped up in substantially better condition, even if the color is not as attractive. You can find this 1986 Volkswagen Quantum Syncro wagon for sale for $2500 in South Everett, WA (the same town, even!). Everett is clearly a QSW hotspot.

Shopping on Holiday – 1969 VW Type 3 Fastback

January 21, 2014

A weekend trip out to the Yosemite area would not be complete without a quick search through the classifieds to see what’s on the local market. Plenty of people go on vacation and look at real estate with an eye towards buying their mountain get-away, but, as the saying goes, you can sleep in your car but you can’t drive your house. In among all the modern cars, snow cars, and beaten up pickup trucks, there are a handful of gems. First is this 1969 VW Type 3 Fastback, for sale (or trade) in Placerville, CA for $4000.
