To broaden the scope a little, and to take full advantage of your faithful scribe’s language abilities, we’re going to start an occasional feature looking at listings abroad. We’ll try to restrain ourselves to cars that can legally be brought into any state or province, although you’ll have to ask yourself whether you’d honestly want to do so! And the first car that will incite us to pose that question is a rather unusual car, the product of Italians building foreign cars under license (which was, and kind of is, more common than you might have thought). Check out this 1984 Alfa Romeo Arna, for sale for €1200 (about $1655) in Cassano Magnago, Varese, Italy.

March 21, 2014Brown ‘n’ Crispy – 1975 BMW 2002
March 19, 2014Type “brown and crispy” into your favorite search engine, and you’ll get mouth-watering images of rice krispie treats and hash browns. But these words can also be accurate adjectives to describe a car that’s sat outside in the elements for several years. And there’s something fun about the unique finish (forget snooty patina) you get from leaving a car out in the weather or under some trees for several years – it can’t be reproduced or copied, it’s bound to get attention, and it’ll make your car far more theft-proof than any alarm system. Check out this 1975 BMW 2002 for sale for $700 in Petaluma, CA.
Old Yeller – 1980 Rover SD1 3500
March 17, 2014Rover will be forever forgotten in US car history, but for a few nutcases who cling on to one of the thousand SD1s built for the US market, or any of the earlier cars. However, they really do deserve to be remembered for what is arguably one of the most successful designs for a 4-door fastback sedan. Inspired by the Ferrari 365 Daytona and a Pininfarina BMC study, it had a swooping roofline before that trend was “started” by Audi and others in the late 1990s. And somehow, among other fastback contemporaries like the Lancia Beta sedan, the Saab 99/900 5-doors, and the Chevrolet Citation, it managed to be long, low and elegant where the others were rather gawky. You can find this 1980 Rover SD1 3500 for sale for a mere $850 in Mendocino County, north of San Francisco, CA.
