5100 Quattro – 1989 Audi 100 Quattro plus bonus Audi 5000CS Turbo Quattro Avant

March 3, 2014

You can’t really talk about historically significant cars without the Audi C3 5000/100/200 coming up. Aside from being attractive cars that paved a new design direction, taking inspiration from Citroen and NSU, they also took Audi away from some of the rather frumpy designs of the previous years, particularly with the elegant Avant wagon. The flush windows, flush wheel covers, and aerodynamic design inspired many other manufacturers, most notably Ford with their Taurus. These cars were also built under license in various countries – in China as the Hongqi, primarily for government employees, in South Africa where many imported cars were built from CKD kits, and in Japan under a joint venture with the truck manufacturer Hino. They also took the 1983 European Car of the Year award, so 32 years after they were introduced (!!), let’s check out a couple of examples. First off is this 1989 Audi 100 Quattro sedan, for sale for C$2500 in Abbotsford, BC.

Eighties Coupes – 1987 Subaru GL Turbo Coupe

February 25, 2014

Our next feature is a rather unusual car. Do you desire more style and practicality than a sedan? More style and less practicality than a station wagon? The Subaru equivalent of a Saab 900 turbo? Well, here’s your choice (the only one, really). In the eighties, Subaru’s Leone range included a 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon, and 3-door coupe. You can find this 1987 Subaru GL Turbo Coupe for sale for $1500 in Martinez, CA.

1980s Heros – 1983 Volvo 244 Turbo and 1989 Ford Taurus SHO

February 10, 2014

What with all the emissions laws sucking the power (and filth, if you’re honest) out of our cars in the 1970s, manufacturers started finding ways to put actual performance and driving excitement back into cars after the initial blow. So you got cars like the Saab 99 Turbo, Fiat Spider Turbo, and the BMW 325i (six cylinders in a small sedan? what?) as turbochargers, fuel injection, and efficient catalytic converters made up for the Clean Air Act casualties. Somewhat later to the game, but absolutely credible as a 1980s icon, was the Volvo 244 Turbo. Unfortunately, many of the turbos have disappeared off the road, but you can still find this relatively low-mile 1983 Volvo 244 Turbo for sale for $3400 in Portland, OR.
