Generally speaking, 1974 was the final year for chrome bumpers on US-market cars, so at this point, we’re at the 40th anniversary of FMVSS 215 and its diving-board-bumper impact on automotive styling. Some manufacturers (BMW and Mercedes, for example) were proactive and had their 1974 model year cars already restyled, but smaller volume manufacturers like Alfa Romeo, Fiat and most British makes were given some leeway. The Alfa Spider was one of those cars, and while you can see the 1974 bumpers protrude more and have little nipples on the strike face, they’re still much cleaner than the updated 1975 battering rams. 40 This Year – 1974 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce
May 22, 2014Rusty But Trusty on the Street – Two Alfas, Dodge, and a GMC
March 31, 2014Nothing deoxidizes the rusty cockles of one’s heart like seeing an older car running around on the street, particularly one that was not too common when new, and even rarer now. So it was quite a surprise seeing this well-known (to SF Bay Area Alfa nuts) 1973 Alfa Romeo Berlina parked on a side street in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, gathering dust. Of course, anything near a busy street tends to gather dust, and while this car is a project from outside appearances, the previous owner had done extensive work on the engine, transmission and suspension before moving out of the area. Hopefully, this car is still being used as intended – the last owner posted on online forums about flying through freeway on-ramps, so it must be in better mechanical shape.
Dodici – 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce
January 29, 2014The twelfth car on the Sports & Exotic Car list is the Alfa Romeo Spider (Duetto to S4), with a hair under 128,000 produced over its long lifespan. Most popular in the United States, in part thanks to one movie (Fletch with Chevy Chase… oh wait). Interestingly enough, they’re still appearing in movies, with a silver Quadrifoglio appearing in The Wolf of Wall Street. However, in spite of their longevity and success, they’re still one of the most under-appreciated classic sports cars available, which equates to some great values for us. While an auction setting always leaves some question as to the final price, you can find this 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce for sale in Oroville, CA with a starting bid of $5 and only 3 days left to go.
