As part of the childhood RustyButTrusty fleet, the VW Rabbit has a special place and consequently is featured on a frequent basis. Unfortunately, surviving Rabbits (now between 29 and 38 years old!) are either slammed and bagged with wide 13-inch wheels wearing thin rubber, or they’re rough projects needing plenty of attention. Occasionally you do get a nice original example, or a tastefully modified car. And the latter direction is apparent in our feature car, this 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel available for $3800 in Pinson, AL. That’s only $400 more than yesterday’s 1983 Mercedes! Wait, what?

Tasteful Eco-Rocket – 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel
October 9, 2013Schwalbenschwanz – 1975 VW Rabbit “Swallowtail”
September 6, 2013Well, in a strange coincidence, two of the most enduring cars of my childhood are showing up here. We already had a pair of Saab 99s, and now there’s a great VW Rabbit just itching to be featured. Introduced to North America not long after it came out in Europe, it was revolutionary as the first modern front-wheel-drive economy hatchback to be tremendously successful. And the first Rabbits in North America had a unique, if unremarkable design feature the later cars didn’t, known as the swallow tail (Schwalbenschwanz is the literal German translation). You can see it below on this Phoenix red Rabbit on VW Vortex for $2000 in Washington state.
Needs more VeeDub – 1984 Volkswagen GTI
March 17, 2010I’ve written about the first-generation GTI in the past, so that and the recent article on Cabriolets should give you some insight into what’s exciting about these cars from a RustyButTrusty perspective. That in mind, I’m going to skip the rambling and get straight into our subject, a 1984 Volkswagen GTI available for $1500 in Austin, TX.
Check it out – with only 60,000 miles, it’s got reasonably shiny paint and looks pretty straight. How many of these 26-year-old hot hatches are there still around that can say that? If the mileage is correct (trust but verify!), you’ll be experiencing this car the way someone would have in about 1989 (after about 5 years of 12K/year driving). Seller is not very verbose in his ad, but allows that the car has only had one owner. With any luck you’ll get maintenance records and more – sounds like he’s finally giving up his weekend toy.
