Unmodified – 1985 Toyota MR2

October 3, 2013

With recent features of the Pontiac Fiero and Honda CRX, it was only appropriate that a Toyota MR2 be featured here as well. While the CRX seems to have cribbed its design from the Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato, the MR2 and Fiero seem to have used the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Scorpion/Montecarlo as their reference point. The wedgy, mid-engine layout is very 1980s, but also still good-looking. You can find this 1985 Toyota MR2 with bidding at $1891 and about 3 days left to go in Eccles, WV.

More Mid-Engine – 1974 Porsche 914

September 28, 2013

With the madness surrounding Porsche 911 pricing, enthusiasts have been looking around, trying to find what they can still afford. And of course, speculators have been trying to pick up on the next big thing as well. Apparently, some of them have concluded that the Porsche 914, as much of a non-Porsche as the Dino 246 GTS was a non-Ferrari, is next to skyrocket. Sadly, that means a good driver 914 is getting harder and harder to find for us regular folks. Fortunately, there are still a few out there, including this 1974 Porsche 914, with bidding at $1025 and 1 1/2 days left to go in Taylor, MI.

American Mid-Engine – 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT

September 27, 2013

Out of the fuel crisis and corresponding high prices of the 1970s and early 1980s came some pretty interesting cars, many intended as second cars for one or two people to commute to work. Of course, this begged the question of why this prospective car should even have 4 seats, and so a crop of two seat sporting commuter cars was born. Among those were the Toyota MR2, Honda CRX, Ford EXP (remember those?), and the Pontiac Fiero. While the Fiero delivered on compact size and mimicked the layout of such cars as the Fiat X1/9, Lancia Stratos and Ferrari 308, it also developed a reputation for engine fires and poor handling. However, this was resolved by 1988, and you can find this 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT for $3150 in New Haven, CT.
